January 27, 2025, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) is pleased to announce its 29th General Assembly set from 12-16 February 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Under the theme “Building on Beijing: First Ladies Championing Women’s Leadership and Rights Through African Heritage,” this event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and aligns with the African Union’s 2025 theme of “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” emphasizing the OAFLAD’s commitment to advancing women’s leadership and promoting gender equality.

Since its inception in 2002, OAFLAD has united the voices of African First Ladies, governments and development partners to advocate for increased access to education, especially for girls and young women and improved access to healthcare services through targeted campaigns such as Free to Shine and #WeAreEqual. This year’s General Assembly will highlight the invaluable contributions of African First Ladies in promoting women’s leadership and advancing gender equality. By drawing on our historical strengths and rich cultural practices, we aim to inspire sustainable development. This platform will provide OAFLAD member states and development partners the opportunity to engage in transformative discussions that foster the meaningful participation of women, youth, and marginalized communities in the development agenda.

During the meeting, OAFLAD member states will reflect on past achievements and chart a bold path forward. They will endorse a new strategic framework that will guide the organization’s initiatives from 2025-2030, ensuring alignment with evolving priorities and strengthening efforts to achieve gender equality.

In line with OAFLAD’s principles of diversity and intentional representation, the event will witness the transition of the organization’s presidency to West Africa after the elections. A new steering committee will also be elected to drive OAFLAD’s strategic vision, ensuring that the organization remains responsive to the challenges and opportunities in health development. Building on the success of the unifying campaign, #WeAreEqual OAFLAD will also launch innovative approaches that will celebrate and recognize African traditions and cultural heritage that strengthen the continent.
