Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 08 September 2025 – On the sidelines of the Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) will host a high-level side event this Monday, 13h30–15h00, at the Addis International Convention Center (AICC), 3rd floor meeting room.
Under the theme “Building Resilience for Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change and Conflict”, the event will spotlight the urgent need to protect women and girls from the compounded effects of climate shocks and insecurity, while showcasing their role as drivers of resilience and change.
H.E. Mrs. Rachel Ruto, First Lady of Kenya and OAFLAD Steering Committee Member, will deliver opening remarks. Keynote interventions will follow from H.E. Amb. Amma Twum-Amoah, African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, and Professor Senait Fisseha, Vice-President of Global Programs at the Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation. Welcoming remarks will be given by Mrs. Tabitha John of Ethiopia Broadcasting Corporation.
A panel discussion with OAFLAD partners including EGPAF, WHO, IOM, and Amani Africa will explore multisectoral approaches to advance OAFLAD’s new two-year campaign. The event will close with a joint call to action by the First Ladies, reaffirming their collective commitment to place women and girls at the center of climate resilience strategies.

Founded in 2002, as the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), the institution evolved into the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and is an institution that is able to offer a continent-wide leadership in terms of advocacy in the areas of HIV and a broad range of maternal and child health intervention. As an advocacy organization, the First Ladies of Africa seek to leverage their unique position to advocate for policies that make health services accessible and laws that boost women and youth empowerment.
